Rainbow Mountain Tour 1 Day FAQs

Here some frequently asked question about our day tours in Cusco

How high is Rainbow Mountain (Vinicunca) and how difficult is the trek?

The summit viewpoint is approximately 5,036 to 5,200 meters (16,523 to 17,060 feet) above sea level. The trek is rated Moderate to Difficult. The distance is short (about 6 km / 4 miles round-trip), but the extreme altitude makes it very challenging.

How long does the entire day tour take?

It is a very long day, typically taking 14 to 16 hours round-trip from Cusco. This includes the extremely early pick-up (around 3:00 AM - 4:00 AM), the 3-hour drive, the 3-4 hour hike (round-trip), and the long drive back.

How do I prevent altitude sickness on this tour?

Acclimatization is non-negotiable. You must spend at least 2 to 3 full days in Cusco (3,400 m / 11,155 ft) acclimatizing before attempting the hike. Walk extremely slowly, stay hydrated, and use coca leaves or prescription altitude medication if advised by your doctor.

What is the actual hiking time to reach the viewpoint?

The uphill trek to the main viewpoint takes approximately 1.5 to 2 hours, depending on your fitness level and acclimatization. The descent is generally faster, taking about 1 to 1.5 hours.

Can I hire a horse if I struggle with the hike?

Yes, horses (or mules) are available for rent along the trail from local owners. This is an optional cash payment (S/60 to S/90 Soles). Note that horses cannot make the final, steepest ascent, requiring a short walk to the very top.

What should I wear and bring for the extreme weather?

Wear Layers! The morning is freezing, but the sun is intense later. Use a 3-layer system (thermal, fleece/down, and waterproof shell). Essential items include sunscreen, sunglasses, a warm hat, gloves, water, and sturdy hiking boots.

When is the best time of year to visit?

The dry season (May to October) offers the best chance of clear skies and visible colors. Avoid the height of the rainy season (January to March), as clouds, rain, or snow can mute the colors.

Is the entrance fee included in the tour price?

Usually, no. Most budget and standard tours do not include the entrance fee (S/20 to S/30 Soles), which must be paid in cash (Peruvian Soles) directly to the local community managing the entrance.

What is the Red Valley and is it worth the extra hike?

The **Red Valley (Valle Rojo)** is a spectacular viewpoint accessible via an optional, short extension hike. Yes, it is worth it for the unique and dramatic views of the deep crimson-red soil, though it requires a slightly longer day.

Do the tours include food?

Yes. Standard 1-day tours typically include a simple but filling **breakfast and lunch** at a local restaurant near the trailhead before and after the trek. You should bring your own water and extra high-energy snacks.
