MARIPOSA MOUNTAIN CLIMB FAQs
Here some frequently asked question about trekking and climbing
Where is Mariposa Mountain located?
Mariposa Mountain (Nevado Mariposa) is located in the Vilcanota Mountain Range near Ausangate, southeast of Cusco, Peru. It sits at an altitude of 5,842 meters (19,161 ft) and offers spectacular views of the surrounding Andean peaks.
How difficult is the Mariposa Mountain climb?
The climb is rated moderate to challenging, suitable for experienced trekkers or beginner mountaineers with good physical condition. It includes glacier travel and a final 70–80° ice wall near the summit.
How many days does the climb take?
The standard expedition lasts 4 days, including travel from Cusco, acclimatization, and the summit attempt. Custom itineraries may also be arranged depending on your fitness and experience.
Do I need previous climbing experience?
Basic mountaineering experience is recommended but not mandatory. The climb is often used as training for higher Andean peaks like Ausangate or Qampa. Your guide will provide instruction on using crampons, ice axes, and ropes.
What equipment is included and what should I bring?
Professional climbing gear (ropes, helmets, crampons, harnesses, ice axes) is usually included. You should bring personal clothing such as thermal layers, waterproof boots, gloves, sunglasses, sunscreen, and a sleeping bag rated for -10°C (14°F).
When is the best time to climb Mariposa Mountain?
The best months are May to September, during the dry season in the Andes. Weather is more stable, with clear mornings and less chance of heavy snow or rain.
What is the altitude and how do I prepare for it?
The summit stands at 5,842 meters (19,161 ft). To prevent altitude sickness, it’s recommended to spend at least 2–3 days acclimatizing in Cusco or nearby areas before the climb.
Is it safe to climb Mariposa Mountain?
Yes, when done with a certified guide and proper equipment. All climbs include safety gear, acclimatization, and rescue protocols. Always follow your guide’s instructions on the glacier and ascent.
How do I get from Cusco to Mariposa Mountain?
Most expeditions start with a 4-hour drive from Cusco to the Ausangate region (Tinki or Pacchanta). From there, a short trek leads to base camp near the glacier..
Can I combine this climb with other adventures?
Absolutely! Many climbers combine the Mariposa ascent with Ausangate trekking, Rainbow Mountain visits, or Qampa peak climbs for a complete high-Andes experience.
What Should I expect as far as weather?
The weather in Cusco regions and part of the Andes is unpredictable even if the weather forecast says it’s sunny, we can’t trust in it. It is an impossible question for us to answer. Historically April through September is the dry season, November through February is the rainy season and March and October and bridge months - a mixture of both. But the clouds have not followed these rules in the last few years. Prepare for sun and rain no matter when you come. As far as temperatures go, that is consistent throughout the year. Mornings and evenings are always cold. Make sure to bring a fleece jacket for the mornings and a down jacket for the evenings. Once the sun is up you should be comfortable hiking in short sleeves. Long pants (yoga or hiking) are encouraged to help from the mosquitos which can be a nuisance in some part of the trail.
